"Shortage of actors", no one to pick from to meet drama demands say casting directors

If you're a producer or a casting director for a new drama, you're sure to get a headache.  The reason?  There are no actors to cast, especially if you're trying to find actors in their 20s.  It's even harder knowing that most drama roles are about characters in that age range.  Just take a look at Fight My Way, My Sassy Girl, Bride of the Water God, Ruler: Master of the Mask, Suspicious Partner, or Duel.

Even though casting directors try their best to find someone with the same age as the drama roles, they say the problem is "there are no actors for us to cast" or better yet, "there are no actors that can take on the lead role."  They say there's a shortage of actors in their 20s but why is this?

Male actors in their 20s or 30s have their military enlistment hanging above their heads.  A few examples include Joo Won who officially enlisted in the army after finishing My Sassy Girl, Ji Changwook is planning on enlisting after Suspicious Partner and Im Siwan's on the same boat too.

The same thing is happening with actresses.  Those in their teens like Kim Yoojung and Kim Sohyun were recently cast for Moonlight Drawn By Clouds and Ruler, respectively.  An insider revealed, "A lot of dramas portray characters in their 20s or 30s but actors that are within that age range are very limited.  There aren't a lot to pick from so it becomes a battlefield.  A lot of male actors have to enlist in the army and as dramas are getting longer and longer, it's getting harder to cast people."

"We're at a state where the supply can't meet the demand.  So us producers can't help but worry when we have to do new castings and find new leads."

1. [+2031, -21] I know they cast people based on popularity to get the ratings up but I hope they give a chance to unknown actors who have the skill.  They really need to dig out actors that are earnest and passionate for acting

2. [+1663, -20] Please give more unknown actors a chance rather than idols~

3. [+974, -17] Is that why idols and singers are popping up as actors?  Because supply can't meet the demand.........

4. [+600, -3] Actually they just wanna use the popular kids

5. [+592, -4] What they mean is there are a lot of actors but they don't really want to hunt them down

6. [+503, -4] There's so many students majoring in acting though?  There's so many people at university theatres?  You mean you just can't be bothered to find them

7. [+446, -7] Give unknown actors a chance

8. [+440, -2] So that's why model turned actors who can't really act are given leads...?

9. [+369, -2] If you listen to what actors say on variety shows, they're probably all just stuck at home

10. [+333, -2] They just pick the most obvious choices.. let's all give people a chance..

11. [+295, -8] There's gotta be actors. It's just that they're trying to find actors who are already stars.. you can't find an actor like Seo Hyunjin just like that.  Look at how Yoo Yeonseok got bigger after he was given the opportunity. I think there's a lot of people who can become stars as long as they do the audition well

12. [+191, -2] It's not that there's no actors it's that there are no actors who can earn money for these writers, producers and broadcast companies... there's so many skilled rookie actors!

13. [+162, -3] I actually think it'd be a fresh and exciting idea if they were to cast a good actor no one knew at all

Should English brand signs be written in Hangul or left as is?

Caffé Pascucci

7-Eleven

Baskin Robbins

Dunkin' Donuts

Starbucks Coffee

Paris Baguette

Ministop
Daum Cafe: Hangul signs are pretty vs they look out of place

- I'm for them. They look pretty. It's just a lot of those signs need to change the font...

- It's because of the font that makes them look out of place but some of them look okay

- I think it looks so cute. Look at how adorable Dunkin' Donuts in Hangul looksㅜㅜ

- It'd actually be nicer if there were more Hangul signs just for some of the elderly who can't read English

- I don't think it looks nice or anything but the purpose behind it is clear! There are people who might not be able to read English so it's good to write it in Korean too...

- The English ones look better. Starbucks' looks so ugh..

- I freaking love it. You gotta make it Korean~~~ there's people who don't know English, kids, elderly, the point is so that we know what the name of the store is right? I mean we're in Korea ㅋㅋㅋ I wish all of the signs were in Korean

- What's up with the designs

- I like it a lot! Where else are you going to use Korean signs other than in Korea? ㅜ ㅜ On the contrary there should be more of these!!!

- Honestly I don't know how to pronounce new brands that I see so I like this plus isn't this one of Insadong's unique characteristics?

'Hamburger phobia' spreads after mother sues McDonald's Korea for daughter's illness

A mother filed a complaint to McDonald's Korea claiming that their hamburger caused her daughter to lose 90% of her kidney function.  The 4-year-old was diagnosed with 'hamburger disease' or 'hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS)'.  She now has to undergo dialysis for 8-10 hours daily.  McDonald's responded to her claim and is fully cooperating with the investigation.

After news of this spread, various fast food chains are feeling more pressure from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and customers to inspect their products more carefully.

Naver: 'Hamburger disease' mother sues "I tear up seeing holes in my child..."

1. [+4588, -313] You all shouldn't point fingers at the mother saying she's not in her right state of mind to feed her 4 year old kid a hamburger.  Why don't you all try raising a child?  Kids are picky eaters.  There's kids who like eating hamburgers, others who like kimchi stew, those that like vegetables.  It varies.  Why blame her for allowing her kid to eat a burger that's not good for adults either, shouldn't the blame be towards fast food chains who target kids with 'children meal sets'?  Think of how the mother feels seeing her kid in that stateㅜㅜ She's probably already blaming herself enough

2. [+2724, -86] I hope McDonald's takes sincere action about this.  Not pointing fingers but is there another reason why they don't want to reveal the CCTV recording of the day they were at that McDonald's location?  This hurts my heart.  I feel like it's always the consumers that suffer in our country

3. [+2297, -87] Can't believe there are no comments on an article like this... if you're someone who has kids, your world would be crashing down.. they would rather be the one sick instead of their child

4. [+1898, -58] Hope it gets resolved, they get the compensation, and that the child gets proper treatment.... stay strong!

5. [+1964, -97] I don't think I can go to McDonald's. I'm scared my kid will turn out like that.

6. [+613, -63] If people find out I don't let my kids drink soda or eat hamburgers, people around me will react and say "she's already 4, and you're still not letting her eat those things?????" They'll think of me as such a strange mom.  But after this article popped up, people are blaming the mother for letting her 4 year old eat a burger? People's double standards are really no joke.  The fact is the kid got sick after eating the burger.  Why are there comments turning this around on the parents?  I don't get it

Naver: 'Hamburger phobia'... will there be an aftermath effect on other businesses 'extreme worry'

1. [+5368, -134] What are those producers doing that exposed castella cakes?  They should be reporting on patty factories and their production at this kind of time, no?  Or is it that you're afraid to do anything since it's a big corporation?

2. [+2798, -81] Hamburgers aren't even healthyㅠㅠ Might as well stop eating it as much..

3. [+2386, -351] It's not that I'm taking McDonald's side but since we're talking about it, aren't burgers sold in convenience stores even more dangerous?

4. [+1158, -104] There will definitely be people trying to fabricate facts.. then trash reporters who see that will report it as 'the truth'.. and when the actual truth is exposed, they'll try to hide

5. [+275, -18] I'm not the type who gives my kids junk food but sometimes it's inevitable at certain places where you can't bring in your own food.  I bet they were in the same position too and they must be blaming themselves for it.  This is such a terrible case to hear as a parent myself and I hope for the child's recovery.  Hopefully the investigations are done thoroughly.

Gagman Cho Geum San passes away

Gagman Cho Geum San (54) was found dead on July 7th by tourists along the coast of Daebu Island.
Police suspect that Cho Geum San passed away on the 5th by suicide.

Naver: 'It's nice to see you, nice to see you' Gagman Cho Geum San passes away

1. [+11,911, -183] It's not even on the search rankings. This is so sad. He's a comedian that I spent my childhood with..... I won't forget you.....

2. [+10,450, -105] Rest in peace.

3. [+7356, -78] Rest in peace. This is such sad news.. I hope he finds comfort....

4. [+5969, -66] Rest in peace, what happened for him to make that choice...

5. [+5212, -72] Aigo... It's so sad to see him pass away like this.. Rest in peace... The people who have filled the pages of my childhood memories are slowly leaving this world one by one...

6. [+915, -21] I feel like we're neglecting gag men and gag women and treating them disparagingly.  They're celebrities who have made us laugh at one point. I hate people who use the term "has-beens".  Just look at how old songs and singers are never forgotten even if they're not promoting.  We keep them alive through 'Immortal Song' and special stages but if you use an old gag or punch line, people berate you for using a has-been jokeㅠㅠ I hope our entertainment industry becomes one that will remember and honour our comedians... rest in peace.

7. [+767, -14] If celebrities can't find their place, it's hard for them to find a means to live.  Except for a few % of celebrities, there's a lot who don't earn as much and have it tough

8. [+687, -10] He was the flower boy of gag men back then, how did it end up with suicide..... rest in peace.

9. [+652, -10] I get scared now whenever I see a celebrity #1 on the search rankings.  How did the world come to this...

10. [+574, -10] Ah.. in the 80s and 90s he was in every comedy program... rest in peace.

Are horror movies disappearing from the Korean film industry?

A Tale of Two Sisters (2003)

Whispering Corridors (1998)

R-Point (2004)

Train to Busan (2016)

Get Out (2017)
Naver: Only one horror film this year... Korean horror films have disappeared

1. [+201, -7] R-Point was seriously insane

2. [+112, -6] These days, people are scarier than ghosts

3. [+54, -3] Horror movies that got good reviews include Whispering Corridors, A Tale of Two Sisters, R-Point, Epitaph, Possessed etc all of them were made possible by a good name... these days it's really tough to make a horror film.  If you look at the reviews, most of them can't even get a 7/10 but even so, I'm looking forward for the upcoming horror film 'The Mimic'

4. [+40, 0] Whispering Corridors 1.. that was really well made.. in that scene when Choi Kang Hee was running and behind her so many fell..

5. [+33, 0] Chawz is a horror film? Hul.

6. [+14, 0] What failed horror movies have in common = trash content and just filled with jumpscares

7. [+8, 0] ㅋWhy are they making it seem like it's the audiences fault when it's them who can't make a well made horror film?

8. [+7, 0] Internationally, there's a niche market where low-budget horror films can make a lot of money whereas it's completely different here in our country.  Well-made horror films acknowledged internationally don't rely on cruel costumes or ghosts that appear out of nowhere, they win by the story.  There's definitely a chance for low-budget horror films to succeed on story alone, look at Paranormal Activity, The Ring, and recently Get Out.  Even without full 'horror' scenes, I held my breath the entire time.  So in the end for the ones that fail maybe it's the fault of crappy scripts...... the public say that a lot of old legends are scarier than films nowadays.  Doesn't this just prove that stories are the most important factor when it comes to horror films?

9. [+6, 0] These days people prefer thrillers. Horror films are no fun...

10. [+14, -2] For horror films, no matter how great you make it there's a limit to how much it can succeed...

Heightened tension after North Korea's ICBM launch

Estimated Range of North Korea's ICBM (Source: allthingsnuclear)
- On the 4th of July, North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile.  Theoretically, a missile of this kind can reach US territory, which is raising tension internationally.
- A technological advancement like the ICBM is currently putting pressure on negotiations and what their next step should be.

SOURCES:
NPR: After North Korea's ICBM launch, now what?

1. [+6024, -190] The US should now revoke putting limits on South Korea's missile development

2. [+4798, -193] What's even more difficult is we have no way to stop conventional and biochemical missiles..

3. [+5974, -1427] When Roh Moo Hyun said we should develop nuclear powered submarines, the long standing forces were against developing our own self defence!!

4. [+3234, -710] Honestly for a lowly country to successfully make an ICBM, imagine how proud and boastful they must feel.. it's just like a success for them.. but are we just going to do nothing and watch..

5. [+467, -56] For the good of the country, we have to know how to say 'no' when it comes to it whether it be US, China, or the North

6. [+366, -26] Shouldn't our country be making something too?  I want to make my kids forget the word 'war'

Naver

1. [+1719, -171] Listen carefully you bastard pig Kim Jong Un

2. [+1425, -136] Kim Jong Un, clean out your ears and listen~

3. [+1506, -170] "We hope the North doesn't cross the line to no return" Jong Un, you better listen

4. [+1555, -301] War cannot happen... let's stop this one now

5. [+1499, -282] They'd be the first ones to dig an underground tunnel if a war was to start

6. [+385, -36] Come out to the negotiations table while we're being nice you North pig.

Kim Youngchul, from no-jam to riding the president's private jet to Berlin

On July 6th, Kim Youngchul accompanied President Moon Jaein on the presidential jet 'Code One' to Berlin.  He sang his song, 'Ring Ring' at the president's gathering for Koreans living in Germany.

1. [+4490, -46] I don't know if you'll remember but on Radio Star, what Yoon Jongshin said was so important... "give that song to Youngchul" ㅋㅋ

2. [+3489, -81] It's true that this is a flower road.  No matter how much of a celebrity you are, no one can just ride the presidential jet like that.. He asked to have a hollywood debut through a game when Psy was on 'Knowing Bros' now that I think about it, he might be able to no?!?!

3. [+1876, -45] He really did succeed..

4. [+1905, -93] Kim Youngchul rode the president's private jet....? Am I the only one who didn't know...

5. [+1320, -39] Congratulations

6. [+376, -13] What's interesting is he's funny on other shows but how come only on Knowing Bros he's no funㅋㅋㅋ I think he's the type who does well in comfortable settings but his energy drops when there's a lot of people hard carrying around him like Knowing Bros..ㅜ Don't back down and just go for it~ He seems to be someone who's worked hard since his debut up until now so I really want to support him!

7. [+352, -10] He looks like someone who always has a dream and he doesn't let others bring him down.  I was cheering him on all this time even though he's known as 'no fun' so this is good news~~~

1. [+2981, -44] Next week on Knowing Bros, Kang Hodong: Ya!!! Kim Youngchul!!!!!!!!!!! (Grabs him by the neck) Is it really true?!!!!

2. [+1955, -65] He must've been a bit annoyed when they joke about him leaving Knowing Bros so for a day like this to come, bravo~~

3. [+1750, -49] Wow, he really did succeed!!!!

4. [+1302, -38] Kim Youngchul fighting!!! Be successful~~~ this is the best x3

5. [+1039, -32] I'm always supporting Youngchul hyung!!!!

6. [+243, -1] I guess it's really true that people who work hard will be helped by the heavens.  Kim Byungman and Kim Youngchul are really awesome.  They've shown us that it's possible as long as you work hard.  Learning a language isn't something you can achieve in a few days either....

7. [+217, -4] Youngchul's the type to love and have passion for the things he does so a day like this has finally come for him.  I'm smiling because of the president's easygoing personality too, taking a photo like this.
