Are horror movies disappearing from the Korean film industry?

A Tale of Two Sisters (2003)

Whispering Corridors (1998)

R-Point (2004)

Train to Busan (2016)

Get Out (2017)
Naver: Only one horror film this year... Korean horror films have disappeared

1. [+201, -7] R-Point was seriously insane

2. [+112, -6] These days, people are scarier than ghosts

3. [+54, -3] Horror movies that got good reviews include Whispering Corridors, A Tale of Two Sisters, R-Point, Epitaph, Possessed etc all of them were made possible by a good name... these days it's really tough to make a horror film.  If you look at the reviews, most of them can't even get a 7/10 but even so, I'm looking forward for the upcoming horror film 'The Mimic'

4. [+40, 0] Whispering Corridors 1.. that was really well made.. in that scene when Choi Kang Hee was running and behind her so many fell..

5. [+33, 0] Chawz is a horror film? Hul.

6. [+14, 0] What failed horror movies have in common = trash content and just filled with jumpscares

7. [+8, 0] ㅋWhy are they making it seem like it's the audiences fault when it's them who can't make a well made horror film?

8. [+7, 0] Internationally, there's a niche market where low-budget horror films can make a lot of money whereas it's completely different here in our country.  Well-made horror films acknowledged internationally don't rely on cruel costumes or ghosts that appear out of nowhere, they win by the story.  There's definitely a chance for low-budget horror films to succeed on story alone, look at Paranormal Activity, The Ring, and recently Get Out.  Even without full 'horror' scenes, I held my breath the entire time.  So in the end for the ones that fail maybe it's the fault of crappy scripts...... the public say that a lot of old legends are scarier than films nowadays.  Doesn't this just prove that stories are the most important factor when it comes to horror films?

9. [+6, 0] These days people prefer thrillers. Horror films are no fun...

10. [+14, -2] For horror films, no matter how great you make it there's a limit to how much it can succeed...

Movie Reviews: Okja, Real

Okja (Adventure, Action, Drama)
- Director: Bong Junho
- Cast: Tilda Swinton, Paul Dano, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ahn Seo Hyun
- Netizen Rating: 8.38/10.00
- Critic Rating: 8.77/10.00
Netizen Rating Distribution (9,619 Reviews)

Critic Rating Distribution (5,031 Reviews)
Netizen Age/Sex Distribution
This movie is liked most by women in their 20s.
t/n: Okja only opened on 94 screens out of a total of 2,575 screens with the reason being that Korea's top three cinema chains (Megabox, CJ CGV, Lotte Cinema) refused to screen Okja due to Netflix's 'no-hold back' policy.  Typically, films are released for streaming 3 weeks after the movie screening in Korea.

1. [+3312, -246] 10/10 You filthy cinema chains ㅋㅋㅋ Don't worry, if a restaurant is good, people will go and find it even if it's on a deserted island

2. [+2515, -285] 10/10 Stupid C*V, Me**box, Lo**e Cinema.  We watch movies to enjoy it not to make money.

3. [+2264, -237] 10/10 Pyungshik Hyung gave this 7 stars.  Better do whatever it takes to watch it.
(t/n: Pyungshik is a critic known for giving stars much lower than others.  A 8-9/10 movie would be rated 6-7/10 by him.)

4. [+2125, -172] 10/10 The pigs raised in China 'real'ly failed while 'Okja' that was raised in Korea became great.

5. [+2096, -145] 10/10 Stupid multi-chain cinemas.  This is what Netflix wanted..tsk tsk

6. [+1902, -237] 10/10 The director is Bong Junho. I watch just for that.

7. [+1416, -104] 10/10 Money to one, friend to another.

8. [+1374, -117] 8/10 Bong Junho... as expected, he has the knack for making you feel uncomfortable.

9. [+1195, -32] 9/10 I wonder what Mija whispered?

Real (Action, Noir)
- Director: Lee Sarang
- Cast: Kim Soohyun, Lee Sungmin, Sung Dongil

This movie is liked most by men in their 20s.

1. [+10,125, -561] 1/10 I could feel time passing by as I watched this.

2. [+8175, -335] 10/10 I give myself 10 stars for watching the whole movie.

3. [+7922, -538] 10/10 I can't be the only one to suffer!!

4. [+5870, -438] 7/10 My grandmother was cured from her rheumatoid arthritis after watching this movie. Thank you.

5. [+5666, -588] 10/10 The movie that will take the spot of Clementine.

6. [+5761, -693] 1/10 Copied 'The Man from Nowhere', stripped off a mentally sick female celebrity + third-rate director = Real.  I want to give it 0/10 but 1 is the lowest in the system. You better be thankful.

7. [+5044, -216] 10/10 I have been suffering insomnia for 10 years.  I can't sleep without taking pills.. for the first time in my life, I slept soundly without the use of medication.  Instead of expensive propofol pills, I recommend this inexpensive but powerful 'Real'.

8. [+4958, -487] 1/10 Did you have to go and film it like this? (t/n: Famous line from 'Sunflower')

9. [+4149, -284] 10/10 It's a movie that makes you sigh every 5 minutes.

With King Kong and Godzilla, what about Korean monster films?

1967 Yongary: Monster from the Deep

2006 The Host

2007 D-War

2011 Sector 7

2016 Clocking Out

2017 (Upcoming) Okja

Yonhap News via Naver: King Kong and Godzilla are coming... what is the present state of Korean-style monster movies?

1. [+402, -11] Sector 7 ㅋㅋ I still remember one review for that movie "Make sure to watch Sector 7, I don't want to be the only one to waste my money"

2. [+203, -10] Korean-style monster films don't seem to have moved forward after 'The Host' and that movie is from a while back now.. or is it just because The Host was far ahead in terms of CG and story compared to the more recent ones...

3. [+227, -21] If you want to make a monster like Godzilla in our country, let's go with one where it gets fed propofol and viagra and becomes super big then destroys the country...

4. [+152, -17] This isn't even Hollywood.. do we really have to do well in every genre?  Can't compare to Hollywood's special effects.

5. [+84, -4] I remember watching Shim Hyung Rae's dinosaur jjujju and crying when jjujju's mom died

6. [+64, -3] Stop with the "Korean-style" this and that ㅜㅜ

7. [+46, -] A monster called 'Pres(ident)' was spotted in Korea and is currently filming a movie.  It's so exciting.  What other movie do you need?

8. [+40, -3] That damn "Korean style, Korean style"... do we have to put our lives on the line for that? Are we still going around with that thought of "Ours is the best~"

9. [+31, -3] "Present state".. they'll make one if we like it.. the reason they aren't making any is because they're not that good..

Movie 'Confidential Assignment' sells more than 5 million tickets

Requested!

News 1 via Naver: [Movie & Talk] 'Confidential Assignment' over 4 million sales
(t/n: I'll just refer to the movie title in Korean, 'Gongjo', for the following comments since its easier.)

1. [+13,219, -338] Gongjo's story isn't structured well or isn't super fun but it's enjoyable and Hyunbin's action scenes are so visually pleasing.  Also, Kim Joohyuk's acting is very good, I didn't know Gutaeng hyung was this good at acting....

2. [+9258, -365] When Yoona was being jealous in her bedroom, and Yoo Haejin laughed, that scene was so funny ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

3. [+8381, -404] Hyunbin and Yoo Haejin's acting skill is jjang... let's go over 10 million!!!

4. [+6238, -335] Gongjo is super fun

5. [+5074, -287] It's really good

6. [+1945, -99] "Unnie, I haven't seen your face a lot I was seriously so.shocked"ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

7. [+1713, -90] Seriouslyㅋㅋㅋㅋ I watched it yesterday and the line "that woman, do you love her a lot??" made all the audience in the movie theatre break out into laughter, I think Yoo Haejin's laugh was real ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

8. [+1661, -110] This is a movie that will bring Hyunbin back ㅋㅋㅋㅋ He was so cool when he shot the gun from the car's side

9. [+1610, -115] Hyunbin and Kim Joohyuk are so cool, Yoo Haejin and Yoona are funny and there wasn't an acting hole so you could really focus on the movie.  It's a really good film.  There were a lot of funny scenes when Yoona came out.  Our country's so stingy when it comes to compliments, let's say they did a good job when they really did a good job.

10. [+1478, -93] "That woman... you love her???"

Viewers tired of seeing the same actors on Korean films, says it's time for new actors to shine

Requested!

Sports Donga via Naver: Movie 'Operation', Hwang Jungmin X Lee Sungmin X Jo Jinwoong X Joo Jinhoon confirmed casting

1. [+2062, -223] Are there no other actors? Producers are too afraid and actors are being too greedy. Try to dig out some new actors too. They can all act really well but it's getting too predictable now.

2. [+1579, -107] I seriously do like all of these actors, but how I can I put this... it's getting obvious and I'm kind of tired of it now... I feel like it's always the same people every time now, I think we need to put out some new, fresh actors instead

3. [+1354, -129] It's the same thing each time. I'm sick of it

4. [+762, -42] Just by looking at the cast photo, I feel like I've already seen the movie...

5. [+726, -50] The director of Kundo....

6. [+353, -16] Hwang Jungmin and Ha Jungwoo have filmed so many movies, so it feels like it's the same thing each time.....

7. [+335, -11] Wow everyone was thinking the same thing as me ㅋㅋ

8. [+321, -8] All the movies these days have similar storylines and it feels like they're just rotating the same actors around. I don't think this movie will do that well. It just seems like they're only making commercial films

9. [+309, -8] I can already..... see how the script will go.... it won't do well...

10. [+291, -21] Jo Jinwoong seems to have filmed too many movies. He should be more cautious in picking works

Animated movie 'Your Name' tops other movies in Korea

1. [+807, -34] CGV (t/n: cinema chain in Korea), don't be petty and increase the no. of screenings

2. [+713, -44] Your Name... this will definitely top...

3. [+596, -27] Your Name's cinematography is just..... when the meteor fell, my mouth was just wide open

4. [+472, -26] Gotta admit Your Name is a masterpiece.. I wanted to see it but because of its popularity, it got sold out in a day... Hope when they resell, there'll be more~

5. [+410, -23] Well they can't help it because Your Name is really good

6. [+169, -14] I'm really curious about this so I'm asking... can they not make a Korean movie if there's no swearing in the script?
> Foreign movies have more profanity.. it's not only a problem in Korean movis
> I seriously agree with this question
> Seriously there aren't that many people around me who swear in their daily lives anyway
> Nope~ foreign movies use profanity more~ there are a lot of Korean movies without swearing~

7. [+144, -9] Your Name's no. of screens 554, Master's no. of screens 865

8. [+111, -8] If you watch Your Name, the rest of your day will feel so blank

9. [+96, -7] This anime movie is so good~

10. [+98, -11] Lee Byunghun avoided it, but Cha Taehyun and Kim Haneul took the shot
